With abrupt increase in the outflow of Koyna and Rajapur reservoirs of Maharashtra, the level of Krishna river in parts of Belgaum district has risen considerably on Tuesday.
As many as 20 bridges and roads across Chikkodi, Athani and Raibagh have been submerged bringing the vehicular traffic to a grinding halt from some parts of Belgaum to neighbouring districts and Maharashtra.
The outflow of Koyna reservoir, which remained below 25,000 cusec mark for last several days, rose to as high as 34,828 cusec on Tuesday while that of Rajapur also was recorded at 1.90 lakh cusec. According to sources, the outflow of Almatti reservoir is recorded at 1.46 lakh cusec on Tuesday as against 1.25 lakh cusec the previous day.
Huge loss
It may be noted that a consistent release of water from Koyna and other reservoirs of Maharashtra led to the disastrous floods in 2005 and 2006 resulting in a huge loss of property and crops in Belgaum district.
For last few days, the rainfall throughout the district has been intermittent.
