The Karnataka State Open University has introduced bar-coding system for post graduate examination (MA/M.Com) answer scripts becoming the first university to introduce this new system in the state.
Disclosing this at a news conference here on Monday, Prof B A Vivek Rai, Vice-Chancellor of the varsity said the new system would not only reduce timings for announcement of examination results, but also make results free from errors. Every answer script was barcoded; and decoding would be done only after final valuation. There would be a separate sheet with four separate barcodes and marks given by each evaluator would not be known to any body. The software had been developed recently and barcoding of answer scripts of MA/M.Com had been done. This was discussed with officials concerned for more than two months before the implementation of the same.
The Registrar (Evaluation), Mr Ramanathan said hitherto, the varsity used to take not less than 30-35 days for barcoding of each and every answer scripts. At that time there was scope for errors too.
With the implementation of new system, the barcoding of every answer scripts can be completed in a day and dispatched to the evaluators.
The varsity will also open its new regional centre in Delhi on Tuesday to cater to the needs of students of north India. This will be the first of its kind in the country.
Prof Rai said the idea of having its regional centre was to offer a variety of courses to interested students and also to help them in admission, making them available the course materials and to give all information pertaining to examination and contact classes.
Thousands of students from north India have enrolled to KSOU and sending them course materials and examination papers was an issue.
For any enquiry they had to come to Mysore all the way from their respective states. The regional centre would address all those problems and regional director, a Kannadiga would be in charge of the new centre.
A meeting of vice-chancellors of all the open universities of the country would meet in New Delhi on Tuesday and sign a document jointly urging the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India, New Delhi to accord an independent body status to Distant Education Council on the lines of the University Grants Commission.
The vice-chancellors of all 13 open varsities would sign the document on Tuesday.
