The concert was held to commemorate the birth, as also the death, anniversary of legendary 19th century philosopher, social reformer, mystic minstrel poet-saint Santha Shishunala Sharif, Karnataka’s own Kabir.
What made the evening an enthralling one was present on stage were some of the creme la creme of State sugama sangeetha singers who enchanted the listeners with their mellifluous renditions of the various composition of the poet-philosopher saint, who traversed the length and breadth of the State preaching and carrying his godly message across by singing songs with his simple single string instrument.
The iconic face of Kannada sugama sangeetha, the royal musical raconteur C Ashwath, the inimitable and still evergreen Shivamoga Subbanna and a clutch of well known singers like Puttur Narasimha Nayak, Sangeeta Katti, Muddu Mohan, Ravindra Handiganur, Basavalingayya Hiremath, M D Pallavi had the audience calling for an encore, as each rendered soulful soirees after another. The blissful nodding heads, rhythmic striking of feet and the joyous clapping of hands were testimony that the audience were in a whole new world altogether that enlightening evening. The concert was organised by Doordarshan and Bangalore University.
