Dignified and exuding confidence, Esha Deol represents the new young face of Bollywood. Graceful and polite, Esha posed all smiles and gave charming, politically correct interviews to television channels on a recent visit to the City.
But a candid interview with Metrolife revealed that beneath all that poise is a mischievous and smart young girl with a cheeky grin! How much of an influence has your mother been in your career? My mother has had a strong influence in my career and my personality as well. I’m very close to her and we spend a lot of time yapping away like any mother and daughter. Actually now I’m very interested in her political career.
She comes home from meetings and tells me what happened and we discuss it like a Rajya Sabha member and a keen citizen.
I’m trying to tell her that something must be done about the infrastructure problems. It’s not just infrastructure, I also have a problem with how culture is being preserved in the country. Look at the bad maintenance of temples and historical places. And to a certain extent even something like classical dance; how many kids today want to learn Bharatanatyam?
Of course, its not like we can impose it on them by going ‘please please learn classical dance!’ (joining her palms together and laughing). You always appeared protected because of your parents. Do you think it’s a good thing? Well, that is true and its because that's how my parents are. I’ve also never crossed the line. But in many ways it’s a good thing because people have always approached and treated me differently. It’s advantages do come out, like say, I wouldn’t have to succumb to the casting couch. Is there any role that you would love to do? Well, I think one role that I really would like to do is Razia Sultana (A role enacted by her mother in a movie of the same name). My mum was actually pregnant with me when she did that movie. And she actually had a horse riding sequence in that...I guess that explains a lot about me! (giggles) Your role in the new movie Cash is said to be different and.. (Cuts in) You tell me which role in Bollywood is so different? Maybe it has a few minor differences from what I’ve done before. Is it true that you did your stunts in Cash? Yes. I guess action is in my blood, actually a more appropriate answer would be I ‘think’ action! I underwent training at a motor training school in South Africa and learnt skills such as how to make 180 and 360 degree turns, which is very cool!
Women are generally considered to be bad drivers so I hope that people rethink and the women audience can relate to my character in the film. What is your fashion quotient?
I like solid colours, I’m usually in plain black or white. I’m not too keen on prints. And at home.. (smiles) I wear mismatched clothes! In the industry, we are required to look good all the time and pay a great deal of attention to our wardrobe, so at home I just wear whatever I want. We hear you have acquired an interest in cooking recently... One of my friends learnt how to cook and I just took an interest to it because it’s something that I haven’t learnt. But I’m not really into it that much. Maybe before I get married, I’ll do a one-month crash course in cooking! So any plans of marriage in the near future?
(slouches) Look at me...do I look like I want to get married? (one of the guests asks her if it’s because she doesn’t want to loose her happiness) Correct, I agree. (leans back with a smile)
Actually speaking I think live-in.. (stops and sits up) maybe I shouldn’t be speaking about all this. (grins)
You often take up very contrasting roles...like the demure girl in Just Married and the more outgoing one in Dhoom. Which one is more like the real you?
I’m actually like both. I am sometimes the simple salwaar-kameez girl who visits the temple regularly and I also have an adventurous side to me. I guess all of us have two sides to our personality!
