Rainy season pests
Dr Sumana Shivaram

Dengue fever and Chikungunya appear every monsoon and scare the living daylights out of people because of misconceptions. Homoeopathy is a good bet to deal with these diseases

Dengue fever is an epidemic disease caused by viruses. A mosquito called Aedes Aegypti  carries the virus. Infection to humans is caused by the bite of the Aedes mosquito and can infect a number of people.

Dengue fever is also called as breakbone fever. It is not a contagious disease. Dengue fever occurs during or after the rainy season. The mosquitoes breed in small collection of water in backyard of the houses and also in pools of clear water such as a flower vase. It takes 2-7 days for the virus to multiply and enter the blood stream to show up as symptoms. After the mosquito bite sudden onset of fever, chills, headache, pain in joints and muscles, rashes on body are experienced. Lymph nodes may also enlarge. The symptoms can last up to 7-8 days. In severe cases, there can be small bleeding spots seen on the skin called petechiae. This is caused due to decreased platelet count in blood. In severe cases it can cause haemorrhage (bleeding). This condition is called Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever.

Dengue fever is not fatal unless there is severe blood loss and if it is not treated on time. Diagnosis is made by blood tests.

Homoeopathy has effective treatment for Dengue fever and Dengue Haemorrhagic fever. The treatment is symptomatic. The medicines help in stimulating the body immune system to fight against the viruses. In Dengue fever and Dengue Haemorrhagic fever the platelet count in blood decreases. The Homoeopathic medicines help the body to increase the platelets hence preventing the Haemorrhage. Post fever discomfort is very minimal after Homoeopathic treatment. Persons of any age group can take the Homoeopathic treatment. The myth that Homoeopathic medicines act slowly is not right.

Chikungunya
As the rainy season is approaching the mosquitoes happily breed and transmit several diseases. One among such disease is Chikungunya. It has created a havoc and terror among people in most parts of India.

Why do we have to fear about this disease? There is effective treatment in Homoeopathy for Chikungunya.

Homoeopathic medicines will act very quickly in all stages of the disease. Aedes Aegypti mosquito transmits Chikungunya virus. The primary hosts are monkeys and baboons. Transmission occurs mostly in the rainy season. Chikungunya is commonly seen in South Africa and Asia. The incubation period is usually 2-3 days but may be long. There would sudden onset of fever accompanied by rigors and arthralgia (joint pains). Multiple joints are affected mainly small joints of hands wrists, ankle and toes. Pain is associated with swelling of the affected joint and generalised body ache. Pains are usually worse in the morning hours. On the second-fifth day, rashes appear on the body and may last up to 5 days.

Fever may remit and recur. On examination lymphadenopathy is seen. Fever and rashes subside after 5-6 days but joint pains may persist for longer period incapacitating the person.

Laboratory findings include Leucopenia (increase in WBC cells) and relative lymphocytosis. Homoeopathic medicines are very effective in prevention and treatment of Chikungunya. If the medicines are administered in the initial stage the pain and fever can be controlled well. The Homoeopathic medicines help in boosting up the immunity and also increases the Leucocyte count. There will be minimal suffering for a brief period. The joint swelling may not remain longer in the affected person. Many of us would have had the mosquito bite but not everybody is affected by this disease. It all depends upon the immunity of the individual.
