'Students learn from teachers' attitude'
DH News Service, Mangalore:
Udupi District High School Headmasters and Principals Association President Vasantha Shetty asked the teachers to be careful while behaving before their students.

“Behave with a certain amount of responsibility with your students. They learn from your behaviour and attitude.” That was the advise the teachers received during an educational conference held at Milagres P U College here on Saturday.

Delivering a keynote address during the conference organised by Mangalore City High School Headmasters’ and Pre-university College Principals’ Association, Udupi District High School Headmasters and Principals Association President Vasantha Shetty asked the teachers to be careful while behaving before their students.

He said they should acquire the capacity of retaining the concentration of the students inside the classroom, as they (young minds) were attracted by a number of variables in the ‘confusing society’.

“On the one side, the educational scenario is full of ambiguities, and on the other, the society itself is filled with distractions. Teachers have a key role to play here in moulding the tender minds into responsible citizens,” he observed.

‘You’re leaders’

Stating that the leadership of a person reflects in five aspects namely the personality, dress, speech, education and behaviour, Mr Shetty said the teachers appear leaders for children and hence they have the role of strengthening good culture among the students.

Expressing his apprehension over the increasing violence in the society, he said both print and electronic media were responsible for their exaggeration.

“Media is highlighting only negative aspects. Most of the constructive activities do not find a place in newspapers, while some of them are dumped in the corners. We should ponder over the extent of damage created by the media in the minds of our children,” he stressed.

St Joseph’s Engineering College Director Rev Fr Valerian D’Souza presided. Retired members of the association, merit students of SSLC in 2007 and the heads of the institutions with cent per cent results were felicitated.

Association President Sr Cecilia Mendonca, Secretary Rev Fr Lawrence D’Souza and newly elected president Usha Ballal were present.
