What is delimitation?
Delimitation is the redrawing of the boundaries of parliamentary or assembly constituencies to make sure that there are, as far as possible, the same number of people in each constituency.
Who determines the size and shape of constituencies?
An independent Delimitation Commission
What is Delimitation Commission's job?
To create constituencies that have roughly the same population, subject to geographical considerations and the boundaries of the states and administrative areas.
How often is the Commission supposed to examine the boundaries?
Every ten years to reflect the changes in population as per decadal Census.
When was the last Delimitation exercise undertaken?
1976. It was suspended so that no state makes political capital out of its population growth. This led to wide discrepancies in the size of constituencies, with the largest having over 30 lakh electors, and the smallest less than 50,000.
When was the new Delimitation Commission set up?
The government set up a Commission in 2002 under the chairmanship of retired Supreme Court judge, Justice Kuldip Singh. The redrawing of the constituencies as per the 2001 census is underway.
Has the Commission completed its work?
The Commission has completed the delimitation process in 20 out of 28 states and notified them.
When will the new constituencies come into being?
As and when the President of India notifies them
Which is India's largest constituency in terms of number of voters?
Outer Delhi, has more than 31 lakh voters. In Karnataka, Kanakapura is the largest with over 24 lakh voters
Which is the smallest constituency?
Lakshwadeep: It consists of 27 islands and just 37,000 voters
What is the total number of Lok Sabha seats in India?
545 (including two nominated members)
Total number of assembly constituencies in India
4120
Total number of Lok Sabha seats in Karnataka- 28
Total number of assembly seats in Karnataka- 225 (including one  nominated)
Population size of each assembly seat in Karnataka after delimitation-
Between 2.20 lakh to 2.50 lakh.
Population size of each Lok Sabha seat in Karnataka after delimitation-
Between 16 lakh and 17 lakh
