Yo yos are again beginning to become an integral part of every kids life. Cartoon Network Enterprises has launched Pogo Blazing yo yos and are putting up roadshows all across Bangalore till July 17.
A yo yo consists of two equally sized and weighted discs of plastic, wood or metal connected to an axle around which a string is wound. Yo yo, previously called ‘Bandalore’ is said to have been invented in the Philippines.
The term yo yo is derived from the Filipino word ‘tayoyo’ which means to spin.
A few of the yo yo techniques include sleeping that is the basis for almost all yo yo tricks, looping which emphasises keeping the body of the yo yo in constant motion, off-string where the string is not tied directly to the yo yo’s axle and freehand where the yo yo’s string is not tied to the player’s hand. Yo yo-ing is also considered a sport in many countries like China and Malaysia and is catching a lot of interest with kids nowadays.
Blazing Yo-yos are based on Blazing Teens, a TV programme on Pogo. Yo yo master, Liu Chao from China is here in the City to showcase his yo yo-ing skills and also teach a few tricks to the kids here.
The first show took place at Lifestyle on Saturday with Liu performing 30 different yo yo tricks including Walk the dog, Eiffel Tower, UFO, Rock the baby and Magic.
He also taught the kids how to handle the yo yo and play with it. Liu started to play with the yo yo at the age of fifteen and almost a decade later he still finds it very entertaining. “It’s interesting” he quips.
He will be performing at Big Bazaar, Bhanashankari on July 16 and Big Bazaar Koramangala on July 17 from 5 pm onwards. So go be a part of the yo yo-ing feat!
