The comments were reportedly made during a classroom discussion, which angered some students who complained to the college principal.
Although the woman lecturer apologised, the situation got out of hand as students of the entire college were mobilised, who boycotted classes and held protests, demanding action against the lecturer. Soon, local politicians and the news channels got wind of the controversy and descended on the college.
The police rushed to the college, run by Christian missionaries. A majority of the college students are Muslims. A student complained to the police, which led to the lecturer’s arrest. She was produced before the magistrate, who released her on bail. The police charged her with promoting enmity between religious groups.
Comments on Rushdie
According to students, the lecturer was taking a class for BA second year students, when she mentioned the bestowal of knighthood on Salman Rushdie. A heated discussion followed, during which she reportedly supported Rushdie, his banned book and criticised the fatwa against him. Students insist that the lecturer was rude and had made similar remarks earlier too. They said she was hostile to Muslim students and treated their requests to go for noon prayers harshly.
Some Islamic student organisations are demanding her dismissal. They have decided to conduct awareness programmes to dispel misconceptions of Islam in Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
