After he demits office on July 24, President A P J Abdul Kalam is expected to go back to his first love – teaching – at the Madras Institute of Technology in Chennai, his alma mater.
Anna University Vice Chancellor D Viswanathan said, “President Kalam will be an honorary professor at Anna University after he demits office.”
Kalam, who was professor in technology and social transformation at the university between November 2001 and June 2002 before being elected to the country’s top post, is likely to teach nanotechnology and aeronautical and space engineering.
“When I met the president last week, he told me that he would like to teach students at the university. He will be an honorary professor,” Viswanathan said.
Kalam is a graduate in aeronautical engineering.0 from Madras Institute of Technology, a constituent college of Anna University.
“Though we have no clear idea about where he will put up, the university will provide him accommodation at the guesthouse during his visit,” Viswanathan said.
Kalam is now guiding many PhD scholars in the university. Despite his busy schedule, he finds time to interact with researchers via e-mail, he said.
“Students and professors of the university are happy that the ‘missile man’ of India chose to be an honorary professor at our university at a time when every other varsity is ready to take his service,” Viswanathan said.
