With the Medical Council of India (MCI) giving its green signal, the uncertainty over the commencement of much awaited government medical colleges at Bidar and Raichur has come to an end. The opening of the two medical colleges in public sector has delighted the people of the two districts which will have the benefits in the fields of medical treatment.
Bidar Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) and the Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) with an intake of 100 each are all set to start functioning from next month after the admission of students in the causal round of counselling by the CET Cell beginning on July 25.
The two government medical colleges will herald a new era in professional education as it will benefit the meritorious but poor students, particularly girl students who can’t afford to stay at far off places to pursue their studies. While, Bidar is getting its first ever medical college and for Raichur it is the second one.
The seats of the two new colleges couldn’t be added to the matrix as they did not have permission from MCI to start from the current academic year. After a series of inspection by the MCI and the efforts made by the state government, the dilly dallying over the two colleges has been put to an end.
Despite the shortage of teaching staff particularly in anatomy and physiology, the government has succeeded in recruiting teachers as it almost doubled the payment of assistant professors and professors. One of the advantages for the Government to get early clearance from MCI and the union government for its new medical colleges is the well equipped general hospitals at all district head quarters. They would easily take care of the clinical needs of medicos. What is needed is some upgradation of existing facilities and infrastructure. Bidar is equipped with 400 bed general hospital, while Raichur has got 300 bed general hospital. This is enough to start with and steps have already been taken by the Government to upgrade them into 500 bed hospitals to meet MCI requirements.
The RIMS has got an advantage in the form of super speciality OPEC hospital constructed by Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries and currently running jointly by the state government and Apollo Hospitals. The realisation of government medical college at Bidar is attributed to people’s movement with Dharam Singh led government readily responding to it. The construction of the college building had to face hurdles with the deputy commissioner Manish Moudgil going lock stock to demolish all encroachments on the government land. And finally it was smiles on all faces which will last forever.
