Government should conduct a spot study Sir, The agitation going on against the Chamalapura Thermal Power Station (CTPS) spearheaded by the Association of Concerned and Informed Citizens of Mysore (ACICM) is unnecessary and not justified, since the CTPS would bring immense benefit to Mysore, Mandya and Chamarajanagara districts. ACICM has been wrongly informed about the abnormal increase in the atmospheric temperature in and around Raichur city after the RTPC was established. I was a resident in the irrigation department colony of Yeramarus camp which is midway between the Raichur Thermal power station (RTPS) and Raichur city, when the RTPS was still in the planning stage. The temperature used to vary between 37 degree Celsius and 43 degree Celsius during summer and come down to 36 degree Celsius and below from the month of June. Now, even after seven power generating units have been set up, the temperature variation remains unchanged. The government should arrange spot study of RTPS and the surrounding area. N R Vittal Rao

Guide the youth
Sir, Certain Muslim youths today are governed more by emotions than by rationality. It is also true that they are aliens to the basic values and principles of Quran and teachings of Prophet Muhammed. They are ready to die for Islam, but do not follow the true spirit of Islam. Whenever there are baseless rumours about any sensitive issues like the existence of two tombs in the Shivajinagar disputed land or insult to the Quran or the Prophet, youths get lost.
The best solution is for the community elders and progressive minded religious leaders to take charge of the situation and have a dialogue with all concerned.

Root out terrorism
Sir, The root cause of all terrorism is fanaticism of all kinds – religion, regionism and language. We should have centres and able persons to root out this problem. With an efficient network of investigating personnel it can be possible. The training should be similar to one given to counter intelligence personnel in the defence services. M Kamath

Clear approach
Sir, It is a sigh of relief for the family of Mohammed Haneef, as the Australian court has granted him bail. With this one cannot conclude that the drama is over, still it has a long way to go. With Australia adopting a tough stand against terrorism, the equation may soon change, but it is equally important for Haneef to be very clear in his approach and to heed the truth. Harping on half truths Sir, The dice is loaded against the independent candidate, supported by the NDA, the incumbent Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat. His latest gesture of declaring his as well as his wife’s assets is not going to taken him far in this one-horse race. There is no constitutional requirement that a presidential candidate has to declare his or her assets. In fact, the Election Commission will not even accept such a statement as it is not within the rules. The BJP and its supporters are trying their best to dig out cases against Pratibha but have not been successful in bringing out anything substantial which could stand scrutiny. These alleged misconducts are based on half-truths. D B N Murthy

Demoralising debate
Sir, The public debate, arguments and counter arguments in the Presidential elections is demoralising. Supporters of both the candidates are speaking to the gallery. While the BJP speaks about Pratibha Patil’s past and Bhairon Singh Shekhawat”s present, it is shy of speaking about Pratibha’s present and Shekhawat’s past. Raghuvira Chaitanya
