Alleging that the arrest of Dr Mohammed Haneef in Australia was politically motivated, his wife Firdaus Arshiya requested the Central government to intervene and bring an end to the “atrocities” meted out to her husband by the Australian police.
‘False case’
Expressing happiness over the bail granted to her husband by Brisbane magistrate Jacqui Payne, Firdaus said that Haneef was framed on false charges. “He is innocent and everybody knows it including the Australian authorities, yet he was framed in a false case. I believe that his arrest was politically motivated,” Firdaus said.
There was no reason for the Australian authorities to detain Haneef when all the investigations have been carried out in the last 15 days and nothing was found to detain him, she added.
Australian visit
Firdaus told media persons that she was not in touch with her husband and could not talk to him after he was granted bail by the Australian court. She added that she has no immediate plans to visit Australia to meet Haneef, though one of her cousins would visit Australia to see her husband.
Haneef, a distant relative of the Ahmed brothers — Sabeel and Kafeel, was working at the Gold Coast Hospital when the incident occurred. He was arrested for “recklessly” giving his SIM card to the Ahmed brothers.
