It was revealed on Monday that Dr Sabeel Ahmed was allowed to contact his family before he was charged though sources here say he did not do so.
According to his lawyer Suresh Grover, Dr Sabeel was allowed to contact his family while he was detained in London in connection to failed Glasgow terror plot. “He was allowed to contact his family in Bangalore before being charged,” Mr Grover told Deccan Herald over phone from London. But according to investigators in Bangalore, Dr Sabeel never called home. The family members especially his mother Zakia Ahmed and father Dr Muqbool Ahmed have even expressed their concerned about it. On the other hand Dr Sabeel’s cousin, Dr Mohammed Haneef, who is also an accused and is presently charged with terrorism offense in Brisbane, had called his home and spoken to his wife Firdaus Arshiya for one minute. Mr Grover refused to comment on this.
The solicitor said that the Sabeel’s bail application will be moved within a week’s time and that he is working on it now. “We will do anything to make sure he (Dr Sabeel) comes out,” said Mr Grover.
He said: “Its extremely shocking that he was charged though there is no direct evidence against him. The only reason seems to be his relationship with his brother.”
Mr Grover, who is also the Director of the Monitoring Group, London, said the UK’s laws with regard to terrorism are “draconian” and biased against people of Asian origin. He, however, said in Dr Sabeel’s case, the charge was not based on racial discrimination.
