Video-conferencing
The judge is also expected to take up on that day the petition filed by Telgi and his two associates that they be personally produced in court so that they could have access to their lawyer. For security reasons, Telgi and other top accused in Pune are being tried through video-conference in the last few hearings.
During Tuesday’s hearing, the remand of Peter Kennedy, who was produced from the Chennai prison, was also extended.
The other six accused, including suspended DIG of Police of Tamil Nadu, Crime Branch CID (CB-CID) Mohammed Ali, Assistant Commissioner of Police Shankar, LIC agent Ramaswamy Sadhu and Telgi’s associate Nizamuddin and his wife Nazreen, are on bail.
The chargesheet was filed by the CBI on December 13, 2005. The case relates to the sale of fake stamp papers by Telgi’s associates in Chennai with the connivance of top police officials of Tamil Nadu between 1998 and 2002.
Following the scam, the CB-CID registered two cases in 2002, but they were transferred to the CBI on the orders of the Supreme Court along with 46 other cases spread over 11 states.
