Davenport mulls comeback
Three-time major champion Lindsay Davenport, is considering a comeback after being off the pro tour since the end of last year while awaiting the birth of her first child.
“I hope so. I haven’t made any final decisions. It’s a small goal I’m working towards. The thing that intrigues me is the Olympics and trying to go back as a mother,” she said on a conference call.
Prakash cruises into second round
Prakash Amritraj beat Japanese qualifier Takahiro Terachi 6-2, 6-4 to enter the second round of the $75,000 Comerica Challenger Series tournament in Aptos, California, reports PTI from New Delhi.
The wildcard entrant will now be up against American Brian Wilson, who rallied from a set down to shock tournament top seed Kristian Pless of Denmark 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the hardcourt event on Tuesday.
In another Challenger Series tournament in Manchester, third seeds Rohan Bopanna and his Pakistani partner Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi entered the quarterfinals after surviving a tough encounter against the British pair of Richard Bloomfield and Ken Skupski ye.
The Indo-Pakistani pair came from behind to beat the local favourites 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 10-6 in the opening round of the $25,000 grass court event.
Sinkewitz tests positive
German T-Mobile rider Patrik Sinkewitz has tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone, the German cycling federation (BDR) said on Wednesday, reports Reuters from Berlin.
Germany's National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) had informed the federation that a test on a first sample Sinkewitz gave on June 8 had shown increased levels of the hormone, the BDR said on its web site.
The BDR said it would write to Sinkewitz and he would then have five days to decide whether or not to request a second sample given on June 8 be tested.
Brazil regain top spot
Brazil's Copa America victory has helped move them back to the top of FIFA's world rankings, reports Reuters from Zurich.
The South Americans climbed up from third place after beating Argentina 3-0 in the tournament's final on Sunday.
Argentina are themselves up to second place, with World Cup champions Italy slipping from top place to third in the latest monthly rankings published by FIFA on Wednesday.
Hewitt turns to Roche
Former world number one Lleyton Hewitt has enlisted the services of celebrated coach Tony Roche in his bid to regain the men’s tennis top ranking, reports AP from Sydney.
Roche, who formerly coached Roger Federer, Pat Rafter and Ivan Lendl, announced on Wednesday that his next task would be to help restore the fortunes of fellow Australian Hewitt.
Centre to reply on PIL
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notices to Centre and Prasar Bharti on a PIL seeking direction to Doordarshan for live telecast of all cricket matches in which India participate, reports PTI from New Delhi.
A Division Bench of Chief Justice M K Sharma and Justice Sanjeev Khanna asked the Centre and Prasar Bharti board to file their replies within ten days and fixed August three, for further hearing in the matter.
