Suraj Sampath and Kunal Kapoor slammed centuries to help Bangalore City XI put Dharwad Zone under the cosh on the opening day of their SA Srinivasan memorial under-22 cricket tournament tie at the RSI grounds on Thursday.
Skipper Kunal opted to bat on winning the toss, and his decision was vindicated as City XI amassed 420 for five declared in 82.4 overs. At the close of play, Dharwad had stumbled to 43 for two in reply.
Sampath powered his way to a mammoth 180, an effort that came off just 137 deliveries and containing 26 fours and four sixes. Kunal was sedate only in comparison as he made 119 off 144 deliveries with 15 fours and two sixes.
Nishanth Hegde provided the final flourish with an unbeaten 52 (61b, 7x4, 1x6) as City XI scored at more than five an over before calling it quits.
At the NRA (T) grounds, DN Manjunath made a patient 106 (163b, 16x4) to help Combined City XI stack up 332 all out against Tumkur Zone, for whom MK Girish finished with five for 90.
MK Sagar scored 75 as Shimoga Zone finished on 229 for six on a truncated day one of the two-day contest against President’s XI at the distant RWF grounds.
Bangalore Zone were shot out for 183 against Raichur Zone at the IAF ground. Raichur were 56 for two in reply at the draw of stumps.
