Too poor to be normal?
DH News Service, Haveri:
She looks like any ordinary little girl, who loves going to school and participate in extracurricular activities. But there is nothing ordinary about the disease 8-year-old Mehboobi, who is studying in the Urdu Primary School in Yatnalli village of Haveri taluk, has been suffering from since birth.

There are black spots all over her body marked with thick growth of hair. Apart from this, lumps of flesh sag in various parts of her body. The only daughter of Hussainsab Hubballi and Sahirabhanu, who are daily wagers, Mehboobi is interested in studies but feels embarrassed attending classes. “It is difficult for us to afford the medical expenses and so we are unable to take her to any doctor,” they say.
Hussainsab had approached doctors at the District Hospital for a disability certificate for her but the latter demanded bribe. “If this is the case for a certificate, then one can imagine the expenses of her treatment,” says he.
However, he is thankful to Tahsildar Dr Prashant Nalwar, who acted quickly to approve a monthly disability pension of Rs 400 to Mehboobi.
But then, this amount is not sufficient to meet Mehboobi’s medical expenses. Maybe, a philanthropist doctor could take up her case and give her a new life, almost literally.
