Statistics provides the reasoning and the methods for producing and understanding data. Statisticians are specialists who work with people from other professional backgrounds to solve practical problems, stated Mangalore University Post-Graduate Department of Statistics Chairman Prof T P M Pakkala in a release.
Statistics is applied in almost all branches of science, technology, business or other area where information is to be extracted from data in order to understand its uncertainty, complexity and predict various facts.
Statistics is used extensively in the Software Industry, medicine, economics, engineering, insurance sector, bioinformatics, Government Surveys, Market Research, Law and Justice, Forestry, Policy, National Defenses, Agriculture, Industrial research, Forensic science, Political science, Quality assurance, Ecology, Demography, Biomedical Research, Animal Health, Pharmacology, Genetics and Epidemiology to name a few.
Statisticians are employed in the Indian Statistical Service (equivalent to IAS), National Sample Survey Organisation, Central Statistical Organisation, ICAR, ICMR , Meteorological Department, Reserve Bank of India, Research and Development in any Private or Government Organisations and Software companies. Statisticians can work as Demographer in Population study centres, as Operations Research Scientist in industry.
The demand for statisticians is currently high and is growing. The number of non-academic jobs for statisticians is expected to increase in light of many companies are established in India and many more could be established. A Post graduate course in Statistics is offered at Mangalore University designed to give more application papers.
The passed out students are absorbed in software companies with very high salaries. Candidates are also picked up through campus placements. There is scope for research too, the release stated.
