“The Centre is committed to ensuring fair and just trial to not only Haneef, but for any citizen accused of any crime outside the country,” he told Deccan Herald over phone from Bhatkal, where he was participating in a function organised by Association of Gulf NRIs of Bhatkal.
The minister had met Haneef’s wife Firdaus Arshiya in Bangalore on Thursday evening and assured her of all assistance in getting a fair trial to her husband. “I have met the family members and have heard their woes,” he stated.
India against terror
The minister further said that India is against the act of terrorism and will condemn it in the strongest words. But when it comes to providing justice, the country will be fair, he claimed.
Asked whether the Government believes that Haneef is innocent or not, he said that it is up to the judiciary in Australia to decide and it is doing it.
“The Brisbane Magistrate court has observed that his (Haneef) track record is clean and it is first step towards justice,” he added.
Govt concerned
Reiterating that India is concerned over the developments in Australia with regard with Haneef, the External Affairs E Ahmed also said that he has directed the Indian high commissioner in Australia to keep in touch with Haneef and provide all possible assistance.
Arrangements have been made for the family members to visit Australia and Mr Imran, one of Firdaus’ cousins, will fly to Australia shortly to meet Haneef, he added.
