Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister M P Prakash on Friday regretted in the Assembly that ‘politicisation’ has pushed the Women’s University at Bijapur to the brink of closure.
Intervening during a debate on the recent incidents at the varsity, he said the fate of lecturers, appointed first on contract basis when S M Jaamdar was the Special Officer but later confirmed when Syeda Akhtar became vice-chancellor, was in the balance as an inquiry had been ordered into their appointments.
Mr Prakash termed it as ‘discrimination’ that, while the jurisdiction of Visvesvaraya University of Technology and the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences extended all over the State, the Women’s University’s was restricted to 12 districts.
He said that following the recent disturbance at the senate meeting, he had directed the Superintendent of Police to take strict measures to maintain law and order.
The issue was raised by Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Dharam Singh and Siddaramaiah.
