Kannada literature is known for its rich heritage. It also boasts of seven Jnanpeeth awardees, from Kuvempu to Girish Karnad, who have put Kannada literature on the national map.
In an effort at spreading and popularising Kannada among schoolchildren, especially among English medium students, The City unit of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat has launched a novel programme called Shaleyinda Shalege Sahitya Vahini, a series of lectures in schools about Jnanapeeth awardees.
The Jayamahal constituency unit of Sahitya Parishat had organised a programme at Florence Public School on Saturday. The Jnanapeeth awardee in focus was the great luminary V K Gokak. Nagalakshmi Veeresh delivered the lecture. President, Bangalore City district Sahitya Parishat, S D Paarshvanath presided. Jayamma Karianna, secretary of the parishat, Parameshwar S Kudari, writer and F A Kudroli, chairman of Florence Public School and the school Principal Abida Begum were present. The students spoke about Gokak and his contribution to Kannada literature, followed by poets’ meet by the students. Veeresh Ballari and group rendered folk songs.
