There is a great necessity of emphasise on human resource development (HRD) in proportion to the increasing capital investment and employment opportunities, said Central Administrative Commission Chairman M Veerappa Moily.
Presiding over a foundation stone laying ceremony for the business management block at University College, Hampankatta in the City on Saturday, he said the region would witness an investment of Rs 5,00,000 crore in the next five years. Hence, there is an inevitability of increasing our human resource in parallel to the investment ratio, he observed.
Mr Moily, who is also one of the alumnus of the University College, said there should be a systematic survey regarding the potentiality of HR in the region, and added that education should become a public good as it perceived in foreign countries.
Bangalore-based entrepreneur P Dayanand Pai, another alumnus of the institute, appealed for autonomous status to the University College, on the basis of which the college could achieve national repute for its quality and proficiency.
Registration of old students should be made mandatory and opportunities should be created to improve contacts among them. The trend of alumni contributing for the development of their alma mator should be continued, he observed.
In his introductory address, Mangalore University VC Prof K M Kaveriappa said there are plans to start PG and UG courses in business management in the new block of the University College, while certain evening courses will also be chalked out.
Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat former chief D K Chowta recalled the moments of the college in freedom struggle. MLA N Yogish Bhat inaugurated an office for the Old Students’ Association.
Funds flow in
The new block is being built under the aegis of the University College Old Students’ Association with an estimated budget of Rs 3 crore. Entrepreneur Dayanand Pai announced that he would donate an amount equal to that of collected by the association and handed over a cheque for Rs 5 lakh on the spot. While Mr Yogish Bhat announced that Rs 5 lakh will be provided from the MLA’s fund; Mr Chowta handed over a cheque of Rs 1 lakh to the organisers.
University Registrar Dr K Sundar Naik, Association Treasurer Ramesh Kumar, College Principal Govind Naik were present.
