Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahmed on Saturday, while reiterating the centre’s support to Dr Mohammed Haneef’s family, said the government has taken up the issue for consular access to Dr Haneef with the Australian government.
Speaking to reporters after launching the jumbo passport booklet, Mr Ahmed said External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee who had a telephonic conversation with his Australian counterpart Alexander Downer explained India’s position on the issue.
The foreign minister of Australia has assured that Dr Haneef is in good health. Both countries have also agreed to conclude a ‘Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty’, said Mr Ahmed.
“We have been approached by Mr Haneef’s family. The MEA has processed the visa for a relative who has left for Australia.
Our High Commission has been instructed to extend all possible assistance to the family. I have also conveyed the developments to the prime minister. India has sought all details about the investigation from Australian authorities” he said.
The minister added all sides including the Australian authorities have been extremely saddened by the developments.
“During my meeting with Dr Haneef’s wife and uncle the steps taken by the Government of India was explained. We have sought a fair trial under Australian Law. We are unhappy over the developments concerning him”, Mr Ahmed said.
