Fourteen foreigners have been arrested by the crime branch of the Goa police in the last few days, as the state stepped up its crackdown on drugs, overstaying foreigners and the illegal acquisition of properties.
Soon after taking over, Goa's new Home Minister Ravi Naik had promised to clean up the state of drugs and rave parties.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Ujjwal Mishra told journalists that seven foreigners were detained on Friday after being caught with forged or invalid documents. “All those arrested so far could not show us their source of income to fund their stay in Goa. We suspect they have been involved in the drug trade”, Mr Mishra said. Ten of the 14 arrested are Nigerians. One of them was caught with narcotics worth Rs 1.33 lakh. Israeli national Yanin Benaim who was picked up from Anjuna, had already been convicted on drug charges in 2006 and deported from India. The Goa police are wondering how the blacklisted foreigner acquired a visa to re-enter the country.
Veronica Han of Austria who was also arrested on Friday, had continued to live in Anjuna for two years with a visa that had expired in 2005.
The police warned that errant landlords would face action simultaneously. Goa has made it compulsory for those renting out premises to provide details of tenants to the nearest police station.
