Nearly a decade back, Pantaloons first stepped into this eastern metropolis and gave the Kolkatans maiden feel of a mall. Retail outlets adjacent to it hardly winked at Pantaloon's presence till it became the big-fish-eating-up-small-ones scenario. Today, the city is more than `filled' with malls, triggering speculation among many whether it needs a bit of empty space and greenery instead of shopping arcades and malls.
While malls in Kolkata have so far not been a major source of concern with regard to safety aspect, there had been stray incidents, not accidents though, in which teenagers were found in obscene postures in the washrooms. “Our mall is quite safe and secure as we have installed camera at strategic positions to monitor the visitors' movements. However, if you have a bad motive, you can always do mischief,” says the head of security of a mall at Salt Lake.
In almost all the malls barring one or two, except a purse or essentials, visitors have to deposit carry bags before entry. “I find it safe for my kids inside the mall as there is no traffic and no hassle,” says Malabika Soni, adding, “and more importantly, no pollution.”
Interestingly, a large majority of parents who visit a mall at least once a week, hardly feel concerned for the safety of their children once inside. “My son goes out of sight, sneaking into a games shop or playing hide and seek. But the guards help me find him,” says Archana Setthi.
