MANGALORE
Escalators still alien to us
Ronald Anil Fernandes

Galloping Mangalore has two malls and many more are expected to come up soon.

Bharath Mall, one of the first to open two years ago, has five floors with more than 30 stores including branded merchandisers and a multiplex. While 3,000 to 4,000 people visit the mall everyday on an everage, the number goes up to 15,000 at weekends, says Mall Managing Partner Anand G Pai.

“We visited various malls across the country before we constructed Bharath Mall,” he  said and added hat the Company has taken all the safety precautions in the mall.

There are several barricades and there is no question of anybody falling off a floor unless someone tries intentionally, he said and added that there are 30-odd security men besides equal number of house keeping staff who maintain a vigil.

Citing an example, he said the mall has a 50 kv power back up besides a generator. “It takes about 15 seconds to start the generator and to prevent any mishap in this tiny span   the UPS has been installed so that there is no question of power failure in the entire mall, including parking lot.”

Mall crawlers, on their part, were of the opinion that a large number of Mangaloreans are yet to get familiarised with the escalators, though the malls are pretty safe.
