Extortion in the guise of predicting future
From B Arvind,DH News Service,Tumkur:
Astrologer got into the police trap here following his misbehaviour during predicting future of women ...

An astrologer has attracted the attention of the people here by becoming a guest of the police last week. The main reason for his arrest is because of his misbehaviour with the women. The person responsible for bringing to light his misdeeds is a girl.
Upset with his behaviour, she wrote an anonymous letter to the police and based on this letter Superintendant of Police P Harishekaran and NEPS sub inspector Mohammad Mohiuddeen and their staff swung into action.
They first send a woman constable on the pretext of wanting to know the future to the astrologer. As soon as he started misbehaving with her, the police who were in wait picked him up and took him to the new extension police station. This happened just a few days ago.
There is a reason for the incident gaining prominence. There is a gang of astrologers operating in the city. This gang operates on the fear of the people and extort money. Or they cheat the women and misbehave with them.
Apart from all these, the Alemari tribe youth also have started wearing the astrologers clothes and in the guise of telling the future they are scaring the people.
Alarming
As far as the city is concerned this menace is assuming alarming proportions. There is no provision in the law to take action against them directly. But only when someone gives a complaint can action be taken.
However, not many women are ready to come forward and share their experience of these cheats misbehaving with them. Hence not many such ‘dark deeds’ are coming to light.
But the police will not hesitate to take action if it comes to their knowledge and especially the SP and his juniors are always pro-people in such issues. That is the reason when an anonymous letter reached them they immediately took action against the astrologer.
However, not everyone is like this. There are a few spiritual gurus who predict the future without expecting anything in return. They only guide the distressed and tell them that God is always there to take care of them. They are not after money and what ever the people give they quietly take it and offer it to the Gods. They do not rely on any mambo jumbo stuff, said a police officer who got a promotion and was transferred. A few of the astrologers only aim is to grab money and some of them also cheat by misbehaving with women. This is the experience of the girl who wrote the anonymous letter.
“On the first day he behaved very well. He uttered a few mantras and gave me a thread, kumkum and a few other things. When he asked me to come again, I felt a bit uncomfortable. He asked me to perform the Adishakti pooja and take her blessings. He said that the Goddess is very fond of nude worship. I somehow managed to escape from him,” she revealed. There are many who indulge in such things and the businessmen and women are the gullible ones who fall into their trap. Such astrologers main aim is to make money and fulfill their sexual desires.
It is only because people expect instant solution to their problems that they fall a prey to such cheats. It is not only illiterate women but also educated ones who are cheated by such persons.
The Alemari tribe boys are so bold that they freely try to extort money in public. They start with a singsong voice and first demand Rs 500 to perform certain rituals and give hope that within a week all the problems will be solved.
But if they are shooed away then they settle for as less as Rs 10 to predict answers to three questions. Most of these boys commute from Bangalore daily.
The only way out is for the people to be wary of such cheats. The women’s oraganisations should also become active and bring about awareness among the gullible women.
