Leader of Opposition in Assembly N Dharam Singh said that he had purposely not established a government medical college in Gulbarga as he would be accused of favouritism to his home city. This was the explanation Dharam offered to the fact that a government medical college had not become a reality in Gulbarga when he was CM.
He was speaking after inaugurating a cardiac cath lab at Basavalingappa Nishty Memorial Heart Care Centre in Gulbarga on Sunday. Medical education was out of reach of poor and meritorious students as education was being commercialised. Realising that he had sanctioned six government medical colleges in the State during his tenure as CM. Though he wanted to set up a medical college during his tenure, he did not as he did not want to be accused of favouritism, he said. He passed the responsibility to District In-charge and APMC Minister Sharanabasappa Darshanpur, present at the function, by saying that Darshanpur should take up the task as it was not too late to get a government medical college to Gulbarga.
