Farmers in the region have incurred heavy loss due to rain havoc. Areca plantations in Nittur, Sampekatte, Nagara, Khairagunda, Yadur, Sulagodu and Karimane Grama Panchayat limits of the taluk have reached ground due to heavy rain accompanied with winds that lashed the region. Monsoon has become bane for farmers in the region.
Farmers are cultivating areca by braving natural adversities and some plantations are more than 50 years old.
According to an estimate, more than 20,000 areca plantations have fallen incurring Rs 1 crore loss in the region. In Kumbale, Bellakka, Nidagodu, Holekodlu, Ambaladi Grama Panchayat limits of the taluk, areca trees which have fell down are more in number then those in good condition. Cardamom, pepper and lemon which are grown as side crops with areca have been destroyed due to rain and wind.
The region is engulfed with backwater of Sharavathy, Chakra and Savehakkalu projects. Farmers incurred loss from past 3 years as fungal infection called kole roga attacked areca crop. Price of areca is fluctuating in the market which is controlled by middle men and gutka companies. Heavy rain and wind that lashed the region this monsoon has further complicated problems for farmers.
