Promising a hassle-free automated enquiry services, the South Western Railways have decided to install 25 touch screen terminals at various railway stations of Karnataka.
Divisional Railway Manager Mahesh Mangal told Deccan Herald that the decision to install touch screen terminals was taken to reduce dependence on the enquiry counters. These touch screen terminals would not merely tell about the train timing but also about vacant seats in compartments, reservation status and train fares.“The terminals would also give information about the status of the train, like its location,” said the DRM adding, “suppose anyone wants to know the status of Chennai-bound train then the terminal would give information about the last station the train had crossed.” Besides it would also give details of the composition of the train, which means the position of coaches. “This will be of great help to the physically challenged and senior citizens, as they can reach the coach directly, in which they have reserved their seats, ,” added DRM. Altogether 25 touch screen terminals would be installed at various stations of Karnataka, including seven at Bangalore City Railway Station. Two each would be installed at Cantonment and Yeshwanthpur railway stations. There will be two touch screen terminals each at prominent stations under SW Railway. For visibility reason these touch screen terminals would be of yellow colour. The railways have been given contract to install these terminals by the end of July, at all the selected stations.
