The State government has released a grant of Rs 15.20 crore to 12 backward border taluks of the State for improving the water supply system. The grant has been released as per the recommendations made by the D M Nanjundappa Committee report on regional imbalance.
Zilla Panchayats have been specifically instructed to use the funds not only for improving water systems but also to provide potable and quality water to people.
The funds have been earmarked in the 2007-08 budget to improve water supply system in the most problematic villages of the border taluks which have been categorised as backward by the Nanjundappa Committee according to sources in the department of Panchayat Raj and Rural Development. The respective Zilla Panchayats have been instructed to finalise action plans and submit the same to the government for approval. The grants will not lapse if they are not used within the current financial year and they could be passed on to the next year also. Out of the 12 border taluks selected, six are in Hyderabad Karnataka region and the remaining are from other regions. Incidentally Chennagiri taluk has got the highest allocation of Rs 220 lakh among the 12 taluks while Hosadurga taluk has got the least allocation of Rs 50 lakh. Taluk-wise allocation of grants are as follows.
Aurad - Rs 140 lakh; Aland - Rs 150 lakh; Chincholi - Rs 140 lakh; Kushtagi - Rs 100 lakh; Lingsugur - Rs 100 lakh; Devadurga - Rs 100 lakh; Basavanabagewadi - Rs 100 lakh; Harapanahalli - Rs 100 lakh; Bagepalli - Rs 140 lakh and Pavagada - Rs 140 lakh.
