Only a person who is a manager and a leader at the same time can succeed in any walk of life, said Infosys Vice President Narendran Koduvattat.
Speaking after inaugurating the first batch of the new post-graduate programme in Business Administration at National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) in Surathkal on Monday, he said that the leadership quality has to come from within a person, though some training can be given, while the managing skills can be taught. He urged the new MBA students to put in their own effort to understand their leadership qualities, especially the humane aspect of it.
Stressing on the importance of quality management in any business, he said that quality is a culture and a way of living which is not putting a board of ISO certification or saying that you believe in practising quality.
“The culture of quality is practising what you believe is quality in all walks of life”, he said and added that it is not something that can be taught.
The challenge of a manager is to make use of the resources available. Only a person’s own creativity helps him/her do it, Mr Koduvattat said and advised the students to study beyond the text books and apply their mind.
He said that India is no longer a country of good people and bad system, but one of good system too, claiming it to be the reason why the nation is a preferred destination of industries now a days.
Mr Koduvattat said that the companies no longer absorb talents from any particular country, but from anywhere it is available and hence the Indian managers have to be global managers.
NITK Director Dr Sandeep Sancheti said that MBA is one of the six PG courses being started at NITK this year. He stressed the importance of time management in success and advised the students to take both success and failure as part of each other.
Prof G K Shivakumar was the guest of honour on the occasion. Head of the Department of Humanities, Social Sciences and Management Dr A H Sequeira was present on the occasion.
