On the other side of the fence, the Congress mulled over rewarding those who helped the government in the nick of time.
The BJP and other parties have moved petitions to the Speaker for disqualification of the members who defied party whip
The BJP on Wednesday expelled eight of its MPs, including three from Karnataka, who engaged in cross-voting and abstentions.
In all, 14 MPs from various parties voted in favour of the government. Eight of the NDA MPs abstained from voting, which include four from the BJP and one each from the Shiv Sena, JD(U), Shrimoni Akali Dal (SAD) and Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF).
The eight BJP MPs expelled are Brijbhushan Sharan Singh (Balrampur, UP), Manjunath Kunnur (Dharwad, Karnataka), Chander Bhan Singh (Damoh, Madhya Pradesh), H D Sanglania (Bangalore North, Karnataka), Manorama Madhawraj (Udupi, Karnataka), Haribhav Rathore (Yavatmal, Maharashtra), Babubhai Karara (Dohad, Gujarat) and Somabhai Patel (Surendra Nagar, Gujarat). Four of the expelled BJP MPs had voted in favour of the UPA government while the rest had absented from the House.
From Karnataka two saffron MPs — Kunnur and Sanglania — voted in favour of the government with Madhawraj abstaining. One BJP MP each from UP (Brij Bhushan Singh) and Gujarat (Soma Bhai Patel) had cast their votes in favour of the trust vote. The BJP MP from Maharastra (Haribhai Rathore) and another MP from Gujarat (Babubhai Katara) abstained.
Another BJP MP D C Srikantappa (Chikmagalur) from Karnataka, was also absent during the voting but on account of illness. Among the NDA allies, one MP from JD(U) P P Koya (Lakshadweep) stayed away while another MP from the same party Ramswarup Prasad (Nalanda, Bihar) voted for the government. Similarly, Biju Janata Dal’s Harihara Swain (Askka, Orissa) defied the party whip and is likely to be expelled from the party.
Tukaram Renge Patil (Shiv Sena), Mamata Banerjee (Trinamool Congress), Vanlalzawma (MNF) did not turn up in the House for the voting.
Reacting to his expulsion, BJP MP Haribhav said even if he had been present in the House he would have “mostly” voted for the government, adding that he would join the Congress or the NCP.
The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) expelled Nagarkumool MP M Jagannatham who defied the party whip. Another TDP MP D K Audikesavulu (Chittoor) chose to abstain from voting.
The Telangana Rashtriya Samiti (TRS) which had joined hands with BSP-TDP-Left saw one of its members A Narendra (Medak, Andhra Pradesh) voting for the government. Similarly MDMK member L Ganesan and Gingee Ramchandran (Tamil Nadu) defied the party whip to go along with the government.
National Loktantrik Party’s lone MP Baleshwwar Yadav (Padruana, UP) also went against the party’s direction to back the trust vote. Former prime minister H D Deve Gowda-led Janata Dal (S) witnessed desertion by one MP M Shivanna (Chamrajnagar, Karnataka).
Independent MPs who finally added up to the government’s winning tally of 275 are S K Bwismuthiary (Kokrajhar, Assam), Mani Charenamei (Outer Manipur), N Nakul Das (Sikkim).
Six of the 39 SP MPs — Munawar Hasan, Raj Narain Budholiya, Jai Prakash, S P Baghel and Atique Ahmed and Afzal Ansari — voted against the government, so did Kuldeep Bishnoi, son of former Congress chief minister Bhajan Lal, representing Bhiwani (Haryana).
While the Opposition conglomerate including NDA and UNPA have promptly served expulsion notices to the rebel members, the Congress party is set to roll out a red carpet for “the outsiders” who helped them win the confidence vote. Most of the MPs, if they wish, would be inducted in the party, said sources in the Congress.
