In a tragic accident, a 10-year-old girl fell into a sump and died at Anatha Sishu Sevashram premises, in Wilson Garden on Tuesday.
According to Sevashram secretary Saraswathi Bhat, Yamuna, a fifth standard student of KSRTC Quarters Government Primary School, went to wash her plate and accidently fell into the sump.
Though she was rescued almost immediately and rushed to the hospital, doctors declared her “brought dead”. “Our efforts to reach out to Yamuna’s mother failed as her cellphone was switched off. She is said to be out of town,” Ms Bhat said.
Ms Bhat, who is blind, is helped by her husband Gajanan Bhat, who was away when the incident occurred. Police say the Sevashrama is managed by a trust which is not registered.
The sump, which had not been used for three months, was filled up on Monday. While a case of unnatural death has been registered, police said the Sevashrama was not responsible as the sump was “properly covered”.
