Google-Gears
This is a utility where working offline on even dynamic contents is made possible by Google with its open source software Google-Gears. “Gears” is open source browser extension that makes web applications to provide offline functionality using JavaScript Application Program Interfaces (APIs).
It has three modules: Local server Module, Database Module, Workpool module.
Once the installation is completed, we have to verify whether applications can be used offline. This is made possible by the Local server API which will store application resources in cache memory and makes it available offline.
The LocalServer module allows us to store web application in cache and any http requests for the resources will be served locally without internet connection. The next question that arises is can we cache dynamic web pages so that database updates can be done.
The answer is clear yes. The Database module provides browser-local relational data storage for our JavaScript web application.
Performance of the browser is unaffected by a feature called Workpool module; which runs database operations as background process.
A complete tutorial about utilising “Gears” to its fullest extent is available at http://code.google.com
BETA version of Google-Gears is available for developers to further enhance the operability of the software.
It cannot be used to deploy any applications currently.
Google Gears (Beta) is downloadable from http://gears.google.com which can be installed on Windows, Linux and Mac machines.
