The Government on Tuesday hoped that the innocence pleaded by doctor Mohammed Haneef, under detention in Australia for over three weeks on charges of supporting a terrorist group, would be taken up in the “right perspective” by the authorities in that country.
“Our mission in Australia is doing everything possible in this matter,” Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahamed said when Iqbal Siddiqui, uncle of Haneef’s wife, Firdous, met him on Tuesday.
Haneef’s relative, Imran Siddiqi, who has flown to Australia to meet the detained doctor, will meet the Indian High Commissioner on Wednesday, Mr Ahamed said. “I am sure that the innocence pleaded by Haneef will be definitely taken up in right perspective by the people concerned,” the minister said. The Indian mission in Canberra on Tuesday said Haneef was in good health and it was helping his family in arranging legal assistance. India has conveyed its concern to the Australian government that Haneef should be treated fairly and justly under Australian law, the statement said.
It said that Australian police have requested for assistance in the case and that the same will be considered and decided upon in accordance with relevant provisions of Indian law.
