Rookie cookie makers
Swathi Narayan & Divya P

The Cookie Man Best Baker Contest 2007, held recently at their outlet in Garuda Mall, dished out some of the City’s baking talent from the school circuit. The event, a national cookie-baking contest for school children is held in seven cities across the country.

Prior to the contest, Cookie Man chefs conducted ‘Dirty your hands’ demonstrations in different schools across the City that involved teaching students the intricacies of cookie making. After this, two students each from 20 different schools were selected to take part in the regional finals on the basis of a questionnaire test.

These students were asked to make the dough themselves and bring their own add ons, if needed. Cookie Man provided them with the materials required to bake cookies along with their ovens for best possible results.

“We were excited about the whole event and keen on participating when Cookie Man visited our school. The cookies we baked are quite good and we are extremely happy with the result,” quipped Tarini and Rithika, class IX students of Frank Anthony Public School.

Even though there were fewer boys than girls, their enthusiasm was intact. Mustafa Rehan and Hitesh of R V Public School were as eager as any other participant present. “This is the first time we have actually tried baking and we enjoyed the process thoroughly. We hope our principal comes to taste our cookies,” they said.

Dhanya and Aashita Sood, class X students of Vidyaniketan added, “Our principal and teachers have been really supportive regarding this contest. We have cookery as a course in our school and we are students of the subject. Which is why this has been a good exposure for us apart from being a lot of fun.”

The winners, Ayesha Zaffer and Kibria Mariam from Bishop Cotton Girls School, were given a trophy and a chance to participate in the National Baking finals to be held in Chennai on August 15. There, they will compete with teams from Pune, Noida, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Chennai.

The chief judge of the event was Chef Anubhav of Leela Palace. Along with him were Sonika Rajan, Cookie Man Franchisee, Bangalore and Praveen Alexander, General Manager, Marketing, Cookie Man India.
