A protest rally was organised the municipal workers in Tumkur on Thursday, on the seventh day of their protest.
The protesters, who took out a rally from the Town Hall, gathered at Batawadi circle National Highway 4 and 206 meet. They blocked the vehicular movement on the road.
The president of the Municipal Workers’ Association Bidaraiah led the protest.
Their demands included: extension of recommendations made by the Fifth Pay Commission to the Municipal workers too; regularisation of the services of daily wage employees who were appointed after January 1, 1986 ; settle service-related problems and stopping the practice of recruiting Municipal workers via contract system.
The government should take steps to meet their demand as early as possible, the protesters said, otherwise the agitation will be intensified.
However, the protest has shown its effect in the town with garbage piled up everywhere with the fear of epidemics outbreak mounting.
