Police resorted to lathicharge and arrested over 1,000 Left activists when CPI and CPI (M) cadre tried to lay siege on district collectorates demanding Andhra Pradesh Government distribute agricultural lands and house sites to the poor.
More than 200 activists were arrested and ten injured when police lathicharged a mob which pelted stones on them near the Mojamjahi Market. Police also lobbed tear gas shells to control the rioters.
Tension prevailed for some time as the police and Left activists clashed. Reports from the districts said several Left leaders and activists were arrested when they tried to besiege collectorates.
In some districts, police resorted to lathicharge resulting in many receiving minor injuries.
CPI and CMP Leaders K Narayana and B V Raghavulu had launched indefinite hunger strike on July 22 here demanding the government constitute a Commission to implement the recommendations of the K Ranga Rao Committee report on land reforms.
