CHESS / Gupta finishes fourth in Balaguer International
Patchy Hari held by Miton
Montreal (Canada), pti:

Grandmaster P Harikrishna slipped to the second position in the Montreal International Chess tournament after drawing his sixth round game against Polish Grandmaster Kamil Miton.
Grandmaster Sergei Tiviakov surged into the lead by beating local star Mark Bluvshtein with the black pieces.
Overnight leaders Vassily Ivanchuk and Gata Kamsky, who shared the pole position with Harikrishna after five rounds, were also pushed to the joint second spot with four points after splitting point with Pavel Eljanov and Emil Sutovsky respectively.
Meanwhile, British Grandmaster Nigel Short’s woes continued as he went down to Canadian GM Pascal Charbonneau for his fifth loss in six rounds.
Harikrishna played the solid Slav defence against Miton and reached a balanced position after the opening. He allowed his kingside pawn structure to be damaged but obtained the better bishop in the process.
There was only one open file on the board which made the exchange of heavy pieces inevitable and the players agreed to a draw in a simplified position on the 20th move.
Results (round six): Mark Bluvshtein (Can, 2.5) lt to Sergei Tiviakov (Ned, 4.5); Kamil Miton (Pol, 2.5) drew with P Harikrishna (Ind, 4.0); Pavel Eljanov (Ukr,3.5) drew Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr, 4.0);Gata Kamsky(USA, 4.0) drew Emil Sutovsky (Isr, 2.0); Pascal Charbonneau (Can, 1.5) bt Nigel Short (Eng, 0.5).
Gupta fourth
International Master Abhijeet Gupta drew his 10th and final round game with GM Levon Aroshidze of Ukraine to finish fourth in the Balaguer International Open Chess tournament in Spain, adds PTI.
After Abhijeet had made his GM norm in the previous round, there was better news for the Indian contingent on the final day as Ashwin Jayaram made his third and final International Master norm while Abhishek Das made his second IM norm.
In the final round game Ashwin split the point with IM Roeder Mathias of Germany.
Alexander Delchev of Bulgaria emerged winner after beating GM Oleg Korneev of Russia. Delchev scored eight points in all and tied for the first place with Vinay Bhat, an International Master of Indian origin who represents the United States.
Final Indian standings: 4. Abhijeet Gupta (7.5); 7. R Arun Karthik (7); 12. Ashwin Jayaram (7); 19. Abhishek Das (6.5); 25. Dinesh Kumar Sharma (6.5).
