Calappa spurs B’lore Friends
Monish Calappa scored three goals as Bangalore Friends Hockey Club crushed Leo Hockey Club 8-2 in the State ‘C’ division hockey league championship at the KSHA stadium on Thursday.
Calappa struck in the 12th, 20th and 37th minutes, and received support from Michael Bakes, who netted a brace in the 36th and 48th minutes. The other goals for the winners came from Nanda Kumar (25th), Mahendran (28th) and Sanjay Phillip (55th).
And to think that Leo led 2-1 midway through the first half! Banu Prakash cancelled out Calappa’s first goal in the 16th minute and Ranjith Reddy scored in the 18th to give his side the lead, but from then on, it was one-way traffic as Bangalore Friends hit back with a vengeance.

it easy
St Joseph’s School beat Auden English School in straight games in the volleyball tie of the YMCA inter-school sports fest.

Cyril dazzles with all-round show
Cyril followed up a spell of two for 30 with a quickfire 51 (52b, 9x4) to help SJIMS ‘A’ defeat Carmel High School by six wickets in the Arokiaswamy memorial inter-school cricket tournament at the SJIMS New Fields ground on Thursday.
After restricting Carmel to 158 for seven from their 30 overs, SJIMS raced to 162 for four with five overs to spare, Prashanth applying the finishing touches with a 14-ball 28 (6x4).
Brief scores:  Arokiaswamy Memorial (U-14):  Carmel High School: 158/7 in 30 overs (Akshay K 27, Arihant R 25, Bharath M 25 n.o.; Cyril 2-30, Sachin RG 2-22) lt to SJIMS ‘A’: 162/4 in 25 overs (Cyril 51, Prashanth 28 n.o.).
Centenary Cup (U-13): SJIMBS ‘B’: 128 all out in 29.3 overs (Kevin 25) lt to FAPS: 130/4 in 19.3 overs (Dheeraj 55, Tilak 38 n.o; N Rohit 2-15).
Nagesh, Augustin take honours
R Nagesh of Kumaran’s School won the Seniors title in the Prakrit Kidzone inter-school chess tournament that concluded in Bangalore recently. Nagesh with seven points finished ahead of A Amith of Vivekananda School and Neema Titta of Jubilee School.
Augustin A made a clean sweep to lift the Middle School category (Standard V to VII) title while the Primary School honours went to FIDE rated player Arjun Bharat of Delhi Public School (North). Varun Mammen of Vidyaniketan School won the junior category (LKG to Std I) edging past G Pranav Reddy of Delhi Public School (North).
Meanwhile, the team championship was bagged by Carmel School, Padmanabha Nagar, riding on the performances of Amrutha, Shreyas and Shruthi.
Ravindranath downs D’Souza
C Ravindranath scored an easy 2-0 win over Clavin D’Souza in the 35th B S Sampath Memorial handicap snooker tournament in Bangalore on Thursday.
In another first-round encounter, Madhavdas Aildas scored an equally comprehensive 2-0 (52-45, 60-46) win over B P Madhav.
Results: C Ravindranath (+14) bt Clavin D’Souza (+63) 2-0 (89-58, 93-66); Madhavdas Aildas (+70) bt B P Madhav (+70) 2-0 (52-45, 60-46).
Five-a-side
football tourney
Concern India Foundation will organise a two-day five-a-side corporate football tournament at the St John’s Sports Club, Bangalore, on August 11th and 12th. A maximum of 16 teams will be accommodated. The last date for registering teams is August 6.
