The Board of Approvals for Special Economic Zones (SEZ), will meet on August 8 to consider eight cases, including two from Infosys, as the process gathers momentum after change in norms and less political resistance.
But with the Empowered Group of Ministers changing the rules and putting a cap of 5,000 hectares on multi-product zones, the stage was set for faster clearances. While 132 zones have been notified so far, the BoA has so far approved a total of 547 zones.
List for approval
Listed for in-principle approval on the August 8 meeting is Adarsh Prime Project’s 468 hectare IT SEZ in Karnataka, Enfield Infrastructure’s 16 hectare IT zone in West Bengal and the 10 hectare Genpact project in Rajasthan, again an IT SEZ.
Other proposals include two from Infosys for IT zones in Andhra Pradesh, spread over 180 hectare, a 50 hectare biotech SEZ by Veritas Infrastructure Development in Maharashtra and 42 hectare IT zone by Blue Vision Constructions in Tamil Nadu. One of the reasons for faster clearance in the past few months has been possession of lands in the hands of promoters. So far, investments to the tune of Rs 43,123 crore have been made in the 132 notified zones.
