Oye Amritsar, the roof-top dhaba on Church Street is an attempt to create the roadside dhaba experience. It is the place for Amritsari street cuisine at its best. The ambience is distinctly dhaba — tile roof over terrace, loud-speakers, Punjabi songs, Daler Mehndi poster, truck stickers— horn ok please. The waiters are dressed in colourful kurtas.
The bar counter
Although the roof-top area is open, it is designed into various areas. The bar section is called Tipsy Singh’s Golden Wine and Beer House.
The Chicken Centre, with the fowl logo, is called Lucky Lady Tandoor Corner. The desserts section, with a sardar logo.
Chef Rajneesh Thapa is the man behind the authentic Amristari taste.
Thapa has worked with celebrity Chef Sanjeev Kapoor in his Khana Khazana line of restaurants in North India.
For starters
The coolers are large and refreshing like Pudina jeera pani, sugarcane juice, spiced butter milk, Shukanjvi (home-style fresh lime juice), Gola sherbet (shaved ice golis flavoured with kala khatta/narangi and masala khus) and Kanji (traditional summer cooler of matured carrots and beetroots made only in Punjab homes). However, there is nothing to beat the king size Lassi malai maar ke.
Starters are made from paneer, aloo, prawns, mutton, mushroom and chicken with typical punjabi masalas.
The tandoori vegetarian items are something to savour. Tandoori phulgobbi chokhwali (chargrilled baby cauliflower in Amritsari spices), Bhunee chaat karare thaat (tangy grill of mixed vegetables and fruits), Hare chole aur khumb di seekh (minced green grams and button mushrooms skewered, roasted and served with onion chutney).
Special dishes
Many of the dishes are special creations picked up from various parts of Punjab like Bharwan aloo highwaywale, a tandoori delight picked up from a dhaba on the Amritsar-Jallandhar highway or the Mogewal de tikke, an unusual version of chicken shashlik from the roadside eateries of Mogewal, Amristsar.
