After persistent demand by the entire Opposition, Revenue Minister Jagadeesh Shettar on Friday announced in the Assembly that two circulars dated October 31, 2006 and January 16, 2007 issued regarding Jamma-Baane land in Kodagu would be withdrawn immediately.
Replying to the calling attention motion tabled by the Congress, Mr Shettar initially stated that the government would keep in abeyance the circulars till such a date the government holds meeting with the Kodagu legislators and also legal experts and arrives at a decision.
Statement
However, expressing their dissatisfaction over the reply, the Opposition demanded a categorical statement from the government. Opposition leaders such as Dharam Singh, Mallikarjuna Kharge, J C Madhuswamy, Vatal Nagaraj and Jayaprakash Hegde took a dig at the Revenue Minister for defiance of his decision by the Principal Secretary to the Revenue Department.
Mr Kharge criticised the government for not implementing the Cabinet decision to withdraw the circulars.
Even though Deputy Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa and Mr Shettar tried to argue that status quo would be maintained with regard to the land, the Opposition were not convinced about the reply.
Finally bowing to pressure, Mr Shettar announced that the circulars would be withdrawn.
