MEDICINE / First World Congress on Manual Therapy
Physiotherapy not born, it evolved, says expert
DH News Service, Mangalore:
Physiotherapy has reached much ahead where technique plays a very important role in treating the patients, President of Indian Association of Physiotherapists Dr Ali Irani said.

“Physiotherapy was not born, it was the requirement of the world and it evolved,” said President of Indian Association of Physiotherapists Dr Ali Irani.

Delivering the presidential address at the opening ceremony of the 1st World Congress on Manual Therapy (WCOMT2007) organised by the Manual therapy foundation of India here on Sunday, he said that Physiotherapy has reached much ahead where technique plays a very important role in treating the patients. It has evolved as an independent profession and patients are directly approaching Physiotherapists now a days, he added.

Speaking on Physiotherapy in India, Dr Irani said that India produces around 18,000 physios every year out of which more than 6,000 are working abroad successfully. “Physiotherapy is part of a person’s life right from the foetus stage to the grave, he said and added that the greatest challenge of Physiotherapy in occupational hazards is not treating the injury, but identifying and preventing the cause of the injury.

Renowned Physiotherapist and expert in sports medicine Dr Deepak Kumar in his address said that though there are very few Manual Therapists in India, there are a few very knowledgeable teachers who has contributed much to the progress of the branch in India.

“India is hub of IT industry and we are exporting IT professionals to other countries. There will be one day when Physios are exported like that,” Dr Kumar said and added that the Indian Association of Manual Therapists have been constituted with this aim.

Dr Anand Jyoti from Chennai hoped that India will reach the heights of Australia, UK and Canada in the field of physiotherapy with the aid of research and developmental activities.  Dr Peter Gibbon, Dr Philip Tehan (both from Australia) and Dr Valentin Dones (Philipines) also spoke on the occasion.

President of Manual Therapy Foundation of India Dr Umashankar Mohanty was present.  Around 2000 delegates from all over India and abroad are participating in the two-day conference being held at Dr T M A Pai International Convention Centre in the city.
