Goa Chief Minister Digamber Kamat who will have to pull out all the aces to save his government from going down in the floor test on Monday, says resigning is not an option he is considering. “Why should I resign? Someone has to defeat me on the floor of the House,” he told this newspaper. His cryptic “wait and see what happens on Monday” lends credence to political speculation here that the Congress-NCP camp is banking on disqualification petitions to hit back at the MGP, which can only make Goa’s politics murkier.
Congress sources said disqualification pleas were being contemplated against MGP MLAs Ramkrishna Dhavlikar and his brother Pandurang for “pulling out of the alliance” without the approval of their party’s executive. With Congress MLA Victoria Fernandes adamant on walking out of her party, the Congress has 19 members on its side — 15 Congress, 3 NCP and one independent. Mrs Fernandes has already personally delivered a second resignation letter to the state legislature office.
The BJP and allies wh o for now have a shaky majority of 20 — 14 BJP, 2 Save Goa Front, 2 MGP, one UGDP and one independent — also suffered a setback when independent MLA Vishwajeet Rane, Speaker Pratapsingh Rane’s son, refused to bite the bait to switch sides.
