Public display of affection may have been banned in communist Beijing. But this Doon valley is also not lagging behind, courtesy the Uttarakhand police.
Holding of hands and any other acts of love such as smooching have been banned in the city. But officially no such order has been issued so far. “Everything is in verbal. But police will not spare any couple expressing love in public places,” police sources said.
Although top police officials remained tightlipped, SP (city) Narayan Singh Napchayal defended the arrest of two young couples who were getting intimate in their college premises last week.
“You can not express love in public places. It is just like creating an offence,” said Mr Napalchayal.
Embarrassment
The incident became an embarrassment for the family of the two girls involved in the alleged incident. Police not only allowed the media photographers to take their snaps but also got their names published in the local dailies.
“What is the fault of my daughter. She is in love with that boy and moreover they did not create any nuisance as being made out by the media,” said the distraught father of one of the girls.
Both the girls have since been released on bail.
Saffron outfits
The police sources said the few top bosses of the police might have been working to ingratiate saffron outfits such as VHP and RSS which were ruling the roost under the BJP government.
But the incident is not an isolated one. Inquiries revealed that few policemen in plain clothes have been deployed at Malsi Deer Park at the foothills of Mussoorie to keep tab on the young couples.
A couple of arrests have already been made from Malsi Deer Park.
