World cadet champion Sunil Kumar clinched gold, while T Nanao Singh and Rakesh Kalaskar settled for a silver each as defending champions India finished fourth with 10 medals at the fifth Commonwealth Boxing Championship in Liverpool.
Voted the best team in the last edition of the championship in Scotland with a haul of four gold, three silver and two bronze medals, the Indians were outshone by England, who clinched five gold medals this time.
India, who sent a junior team for this edition, ended their campaign with one gold, two silver and seven bronze medals. Australia and Northern Ireland finished ahead of India with two gold medals each.
Even as the hosts ruled the ring for most part of the final evening, 17-year-old Sunil outpunched local favourite Paul Butler 27-11 in the 51kg category to secure the lone gold medal for the team.
However, Nanao Singh (48kg) and Rakesh (60kg) had to be satisfied with a second-place finish.
While, Nanao went down 22-32 to Northern Ireland’s P Barnes, Rakesh suffered a 10-32 defeat at the hands of Englishman T Stalker.
