There’s good news for those working in the unorganised sector. Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Oscar Fernandes said a Bill for the welfare of Unorganised Labour will be introduced in the present session of the Parliament.
Addressing workers gathered at the valedictory of ‘Protective Legislations and Organising the Unorganised Labour conducted by the National Centre for labour on Sunday, Mr Fernandes said the Bill will address issues concerning unorganised labour such as employment guarantee schemes under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan, retirement and maternity benefits.
“The UPA government at the Centre is working on incorporating social security issues, minimum wages without gender bias, accident and pension benefits” he added.
The minister said the cabinet has already okayed the Bill.
“The process for recognition of the unorganised sector has begun. All demands will be met and implementation of welfare schemes will be taken up in a phased manner” Mr Fernandes said.

Later, the minister felicitated Dr Ruth Manorama, Winner of the Alternate Nobel Prize, Dr Pravin Sinha, Senior Labour Advisor, Fredrich Ebert Stiftung (New Delhi), Dr I Sharath Babu , Department of Studies in Law, Karnatak University (Dharwad) and R K A Subramanya, Social Security Association of India on the occasion.
